NAP and Reputation: The Two Things That Decide Whether Patients Find You

Before a patient ever meets you, Google and AI have already decided whether you exist.

Not your website. Not your beautiful office. Two unglamorous things: whether your business information is consistent everywhere, and what your patients say about you online.

NAP: three letters that run your local visibility

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone — the three facts that must match everywhere your clinic appears online.

Google cross-references your NAP across hundreds of directories. When they match, Google trusts you. When they don’t — “Main St” vs “Main Street”, a suite number here but not there, an old phone number on Yelp — Google’s confidence drops, and so do you in local results.

AI engines read the same data. Inconsistent NAP means the AI isn’t sure which listing is really you — so it mentions the competitor whose information is clean.

Reputation: reviews are your new referrals

Patients used to ask friends for recommendations. Now they ask Google — and Google answers with your star rating and review count before showing anything else.

AI takes it further. When ChatGPT recommends a clinic, it weighs what real patients wrote. A dozen detailed five-star reviews beat a hundred generic ones. And a clinic that responds to reviews — especially the difficult ones — signals something AI values: accountability.

The uncomfortable truth: the best clinic in town with 12 reviews loses to the average clinic with 400.

The system that works

Four things, done consistently:

  1. Run a NAP audit. Search your clinic name and check that the name, address, and phone match on Google, Facebook, Yelp, and health directories. Fix every mismatch.
  2. Build an ethical review process. Ask every satisfied patient — in person, at checkout, with a simple follow-up. Never incentivize, never filter, never fake.
  3. Respond to every review. Thank the happy patients. Address the unhappy ones professionally. Future patients — and AI — read your responses.
  4. Keep profiles alive. Fresh photos, updated hours, posts about your services. A dormant profile tells Google and AI you’re dormant too.
