Your Patients Ask AI Before They Call You

The first impression your clinic makes no longer happens on your website. It happens inside ChatGPT.

A patient feels a sharp pain in their lower back. Ten years ago, they Googled “spine specialist near me” and clicked through a list of blue links. Today, they ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini: “Who’s the best spine specialist near me?” — and the AI gives them two or three names.

If your clinic isn’t in that answer, you may never make that patient’s shortlist. They won’t visit your website. They won’t see your reviews. They’ll call the clinic the AI mentioned.

The new front page has no links

Google trained us to fight for positions 1 through 10. AI search doesn’t have positions — it has mentions. Either the AI names your clinic, or it doesn’t.

This is what GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is about: making sure AI engines understand your clinic well enough to recommend it.

What AI actually reads about your clinic

When ChatGPT decides whether to recommend you, it doesn’t visit your website and form an opinion. It reads five signals:

  • Your Google Business Profile — hours, services, photos, and whether it’s actively maintained.
  • Your reviews — not just the star rating, but what patients actually say and whether you respond.
  • Your social presence — an active Facebook and Instagram tells AI you’re a real, operating practice.
  • Directory consistency — your name, address, and phone number must match everywhere (NAP).
  • Your website content — clear service pages that explain what you treat and who you help.

Thin presence, thin mentions. Rich presence, real recommendations.

The uncomfortable math

Nearly half of U.S. health-related searches — 48.75%, according to a Conductor study of 21.9 million queries — now end in an AI answer instead of a click to a website.

That means for roughly half of patient searches, your website never gets a visit. The AI’s summary is the visit. If you’re not mentioned there, you’re invisible for that search.

What to do this week

You don’t need a six-month project. Four things move the needle fastest:

  1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Every field filled, photos current, hours accurate.
  2. Start asking for reviews — ethically. A steady stream of genuine patient reviews is the single strongest AI signal.
  3. Post on social weekly. Real photos, real staff, real answers to patient questions.
  4. Fix your NAP. Search your clinic name and make sure the address and phone match everywhere.
