Is Meta Becoming the New Google? What It Means for Your Business

Meta isn’t trying to be Facebook + Instagram anymore. It’s trying to be the front door to the internet.

For twenty years, the deal was simple: Google was where you searched, Meta was where you scrolled. That’s changing.

Here’s the shift, in four parts.

1. From feed to answer engine

In June 2026, Meta launched “AI Mode” on Facebook. Type a plain-language question in the search bar and you get an AI answer — not a list of posts.

The same idea powers meta.ai, Meta’s standalone homepage: a search box, an answer instead of links.

2. Own the index, don’t rent it

Until recently, Meta AI’s answers were powered by Google and Bing results. Meta is now crawling the web with its own index.

Translation: there’s a new crawler deciding whether your business gets cited in AI answers, and it doesn’t answer to Google.

3. Distribution Google doesn’t have

Google has google.com. Meta has the Facebook search bar billions of people already use, Instagram search, and WhatsApp — all potential answer engines.

And the trend favors Meta: younger users are already doing “social search” — looking things up on Instagram and TikTok instead of Google.

4. The model strategy underneath

Meta is playing both sides: Llama 5 (open weights, 600B+ parameters, released April 2026) is given away to developers, while Meta’s own products run on ever-larger proprietary models.

Why this looks like Google now

Google’s model was always search → ads. Meta’s was social → ads. The new model is AI search + billions of people’s posts as the database + ads.

Nearly all of Meta’s roughly $200B in revenue still comes from advertising — so if people start asking questions inside Meta’s apps instead of Google, Meta can sell ads against those answers.

Homepage, search box, its own crawler, answers instead of links. That’s Meta building a Google competitor.

What it means for your business

Here’s the part that matters to you:

If your customers start searching inside Meta’s apps, your Facebook and Instagram presence stops being optional. The clinic with an active Facebook page, real reviews, and posts that answer patients’ questions is ready.

The businesses that win the next era of search won’t just optimize for Google. They’ll make sure their information is accurate everywhere AI looks.
